Alayah's Story...

When we were pregnant with Alayah, the doctors knew there was something wrong, they could never work out what though. Her growth was always very behind what it should be; was always roughly 4-5 weeks behind. Each week I would get a scan and she hadn’t grown much more. We decided when I was 36+1 I would go in for a c-section as she stopped growing completely and was no longer safe remaining inside of me. When she was born, she only weighed 1600g (3pounds) and was raced off to Special Care Nursery at the Townsville Hospital.
Still very confused why she was so little the doctors sent off blood work and my placenta for testing. My placenta came back perfect but her blood work didn’t look right. They did further testing to find her lactic acid levels were very high compared to what they should be! They let it go roughly a week and did another blood test to find her levels were still very high. The doctors in special care and NICU contacted specialists in Brisbane to see if they have a reasoning behind it all and that’s when they came back with she could possibly have a mitochondrial disorder.
Few weeks had passed and she had blood work done and skin samples done, they were sent to Brisbane and then over to America. While they were in America getting tested Alayah had a set back while in Special Care where she choked, stopped breathing, became unresponsive and she was raced to NICU and put on an oxygen machine to assist her and breathing. These episodes were starting to become more frequent. She had another 2 while in hospital, and then we got discharged to come home (after 8 weeks in hospital!) we were home for 2 nights before we were raced back to Townsville hospital again and that’s where we remained in PICU.
Back in hospital we had a different lot of doctors and we were then informed that her brain was starting to shut down on her, her little episodes she was having would become more regular and more serious with each one as her brain wasn’t helping her heart to continue beating and eventually her brain and her heart would fail her.
When in hospital, she started to have seizures which the doctor said is her disorder getting worse as well and we had a decision to make as there was nothing else we could do for her.
On April 15th 2022 our beautiful girl took her last breath, gained her wings and became our angel.
